Yarra Yering is one of the oldest and most beautiful vineyards in Victoria’s Yarra Valley with 28 hectares of vines located at the foot of the Warramate Hills.
Established in 1969 by Dr Bailey Carrodus, the 1973 vintage saw production of the first vintage of Dry Red Wine No. 1 and Dry Red Wine No. 2. Yarra Yering quickly gained an international reputation for quality and individuality.
This Dry Red No.1 is the Bordeaux blend from this storied vineyard, since its inception always Cabernet Sauvignon predominant and the Petit Verdot as the minor part. Bailey was not know as much of a keeper of records, the blending percentages being recorded a more recent thing.
2019 is 67% Cabernet Sauvignon 15% Merlot 12% Malbec 6% Petit Verdot and like always, fermented and elevaged separately with blending just prior to bottling.
Once again Sarah Crowe has done an outstanding job coaxing this lauded blend to life. Rich, full flavoured and incredibly fragrant, bramble and herbs, spiced fruit cake all judiciously framed with oak. Highly detailed with a clarity and tension that take this to a long finish.
This is a stellar vintage from a classic estate with serious talent bringing it back to life.
