Bass Phillip is an estate that is revered for its sumptuous and ethereal Pinot Noir from the uncompromising and radical Phillip Jones. The home block vineyard in Leongatha was planted in 1979 and organic since 1993. The vineyards primarily are planted to pinot noir and some chardonnay, with small crops of gamay and gewurztraminer also.
Brooding, textural wines of great complexity and finesse that are not always easily read, sinuous and challenging in the beguiling story they tell.
Following the play book of Burgundy legend Henri Jayer, yields at Bass Phillip have always been exceedingly low from high density vineyards that are planted close for competition and deep rooted vigour. Highly critical of every vine and every barrel, Jones has set himself apart in his attempt to produce thrilling wines that have a sense of place that can compete with the great wines of Burgundy.
Recently the narrative has changed at Bass Phillip, Jean-Marie Fourrier of Domaine Fourrier in Burgundy has assumed control of this storied estate, also being a student of Jayer, he is now leading the way forward with this true sense of place and care still flowing from what Jones set in motion in the past.
It is an exciting time as Bass Phillip moves into this new phase with the combined experiences and skill sets of two truly exceptional world class winemakers and specialists of the Pinot Noir grape.
Full and fragrant nose of roses and red berries, with a hint of black tea. A pronounced palate of weight and power yet silky and supple too. palate. Plush fruit driven middle with powdery tannins filling the palate with that brilliant texture Bass Phillip is known for. Lithe on the palate for a wine of great weight and a fine length to the tannin make this a standout vintage.
