Champagne Ruppert-Leroy was born in 2010 when Emmanuel and Bénédicte Leroy jumped at the chance to take over her parents organic 4ha domaine in the higher altitude reaches of the Aube, not far from Burgundy, and now work fully with biodynamics producing single vineyard, terroir driven wines that are bottled Brut Nature.
Les Cognaux is a 1.32 hectare south, south-east facing lieu-dit located at the southeastern limit of the Côte des Bars right outside the small village of Essoyes. The parcel is planted exclusively to Pinot Noir only five kilometers from the border of the Côte d’Or on a clay and limestone base.
The wine is fermented in old Burgundy barriques then aged 2 years in bottle sur-lattes and bottled brut nature.
Coming from the 2019 vintage, this is a nuanced and expressive champagne balanced with aromas of raspberry and strawberry, floral notes of rose, peony, and stone fruit. Fresh and rich in the mouth the fruit shows wild strawberry and plums, is silky yet chiselled and precise with tension emanating from the core . A lengthy mineral driven finish that is complex and detailed showing why this is one of the most exciting producers of Champagne to drink.
