Founded in the mid 1500's, Beychevelle has been a place of culture, art and wine for centuries. These densely planted vines, set over 90 hectares, are planted over a mix of Garonne gravel and heavy clay to the four classic varieties close to the Gironde which provides a steady microclimatic protection.
A 4th Growth Chateau since the classification of 1855, has 40% of its vines planted out to Merlot, one of the highest in Saint-Julien, bringing an elegance and poise to the power of the predominant Cabernet Sauvignon.
The 1978 vintage was a poor growing season to start, redeemed by a September of exemplary sunshine and ripening all the way to harvest.
Still in the original timber case the fill levels are all high shoulder with near on perfect labels.
