Josh Cooper is only in his early 30s but he has already been named “one of Australia’s brightest young stars” by Wine commentator Mike Bennie. Josh has spent the last decade refining his craft and well-honed palate, but his education began in childhood. He grew up in Victoria’s chilly Macedon Ranges where his parents Alan and Nelly run Cobaw Ridge Winery.

Working with fruit from outside the family plot to craft his own suite of low-intervention wine, the growers he works with from across central Victoria farm with a like-minded philosophy of organic farming and sustainability making plant and soil health the prime building blocks for wines of poise and distinction.

Although his reputation has been defined early on for the quality of his Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, its his new found passion for Cabernet Sauvignon that is really making some noise. From the famed old plantings of Balgownie that was once under the stewardship of the legendary Stuart Anderson.

This is a stellar rendition from some exceptional fruit.  A study in what old vines can achieve in very talented hands. Josh has collected and drank stacks of the original wines this fruit has made over the 70's and 80's, here he interprets it in a beguiling way, slowly marching across you palate, dragging you in deeper and deeper. Never shouting for attention, it quietly commands it. Bramble and spice, a little pepper and a touch leafy. Oh so fine and fresh, each sip leaving a little more than the last, complexity, depth and structure weighted sublimely.

Look out Margaret River there is a new kid in town, and he means business.
