La Calmette was founded by Maya Sallee and Nicolas Fernandez, a young couple who in 2015 came across various parcels in the Trespoux-Rassiels subzone of Cahors and started making their own wines in the 2016 vintage.
Trespoux-Rassiels sits on the plateau at around 350m in altitude, the highest elevation in Cahors. With very cold evenings leading into very hot days the ripening of the grapes is balanced and even, the resulting wines are supple with freshness, a balanced acidity and judicious tannic structure but still retain the deep colour of Malbec and its primary varietal character.
75% Malbec, 25% Merlot from several plots. The vines are planted on Kimmeridgian limestone and marl bedrock, fairly deep clay-limestone soil. Partial whole cluster, partial de-stemmed and a small component direct pressed. 7 to 15 days maceration with only a few punch downs. Aged for 12 months on lees in concrete and stainless steel tank
Violets and blue fruits invite. Fine and fresh, the tannins come in towards the back. Plump, yet not. Light yet powerful all at once. Mineral lift mid palate. With air comes raspberries and cherries. Bright, vibrant and plush.
