Once part of the larger Pichon estate which was divided after the death of the then owner between his children in 1850, Pichon Comtesse has long been a Chateau revered for it's quality, classed as 2eme in 1855 and occasioanly refered to as a "Super Second", it is sited in prime Pauillac realestate with it's neighbours Latour, Leoville Las Cases and their sibling Pichon Baron.
Remaining in the same family for around 250 years this is a Chateau that has a great array of soil types that have helped them create a distinct style that has been revered yet markedly distinct from their siblings at Pichon Baron. The wines of Pauillac known more for a stark power, Pichon Comtesse consistently deliver sensuous wines that display an elegance from a higher representation of Merlot for the region that is influenced by its ironstone rich clay.
THis is the second wine from a great estate that is comprised mostly of younger vine material that was planted in the early 2000's, supple and a little more open than the Grand Vin, having an early drinking windo that is approachable and delicious from early on yet still retaining structure and elegance for mid term cellaring should you wish.
54% Cabernet Sauvignon and 42% Merlot show the house style front and centre, full and round with a juicy palate that hold tannin and spice wonderfully. Cassis, blacfruits, pepper and tobacco pouch come together superbly.
Vibrant and full this is an excellent gateway wine to one of the top estates.
