Bertrand Gautherot is one of the most adventurous producers in Champagne, turning his back on selling fruit to the larger houses and a switch to organics whilst planting out a massale selection of Chardonnay obtained from Anselme Selosse in Avize as well as Dauvissat's Valmur vineyard in Chablis which have ben wildly planted in a place far better known for its Pinot Noir.
Organically farmed, these plots of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc are crafted into thrilling bottles that will challenge all convention of what champagne is and can be in both a stand alone as well as a gastronomic sense, pushing the boundaries for any who wish to come along for the ride.
Blanc d'Argile has a stone fruit richness yet a salty minerality that that shows how well Chardonnay will ripen in the cooler climbs of the Cote des Bar and express its soils so transparently. That richness can be coaxed further by using an extremely wide glass or perhaps giving a gentle decant, the tight bead will loosen but the flavour will enhance showing its vinous flex in spades.
Made in such small quantities, and the amount imported even smaller, this is vanguardist Champagne to be sure that shows richness and beauty that will unfurl wonderfully over time.
